History

Our history of delivering high-quality paper products stretches back to the early days of paper manufacturing in North America. While we have kept pace with advancing technology, we never lose sight of our proud heritage of serving customers.

Five companies, one proud history.

Our history was written by the five paper organizations brought together by Domtar to make up the Domtar Distribution Group:

RIS The Paper House—Since its beginning in 1915, RIS expanded to become one of the largest paper merchants in the U.S. and one of the nation’s foremost suppliers of coated free-sheet, printing papers, and packaging supplies. RIS joined the Domtar Distribution Group in 2000.

Buntin Reid The Paper House—Founded in 1856, Buntin Reid grew to become a dominant force in Ontario’s graphic arts and business communities. The company made history by constructing one of North America’s largest fine paper warehouses, in Mississauga, Ontario.

JBR La Maison du Papier—With roots dating back to 1843, JBR was itself the marriage of three respected names in Québec’s paper community: McFarlaneson Hodgeson, Federal Paper and JB Rolland and Sons.

The Paper House—With a history in Atlantic Canada going back to 1895, The Paper House was created in the mid-1970s when Domtar acquired and combined the Schofield Paper and McFarlaneson companies.

Publishing Solutions—Formed by RIS in response to the specialized needs of magazine, catalog and book publishers, this group leverages decades of experience in this important area.

The long history of innovation and service shared by our constituent companies gives the Domtar Distribution Group a tradition of excellence we draw on every day, with everything we do for our customers.
